PhotoCraft and GIMP: the overlap the project documents
PhotoCraft’s README does not present the app as a GIMP replacement. The documented overlap is OpenRaster exchange with GIMP, Krita and MyPaint. This site has not compared the two apps.
We read the official notes on 2026-10-13. The steps below are checks you can try. We have not installed the app or reviewed it for safety.
The documented overlap is OpenRaster
PhotoCraft’s README says it reads and writes OpenRaster, including layers, groups, and blend modes, for Krita, MyPaint, and GIMP. That is a file exchange. It is not a statement that brushes, plug-ins, or menus match GIMP.
The project frames the editor around Photoshop documents
The same README presents PhotoCraft as an early-alpha image editor with layers, masks, type, and PSD files. The Photoshop notes on this site come from those project documents. They are not a three-app test, and they do not rank PhotoCraft against GIMP.
PhotoCraft vs Photoshop: what it can do, and what is still missingWhen to keep GIMP
If the task depends on a GIMP feature the PhotoCraft README does not name, stay in GIMP. Try OpenRaster only on a copy. This site has not opened the same file in both programs.
